NEK-CAP’s Speakers Bureau
The purpose of NEK-CAP’s Speakers
Bureau is to aid organizations in the selection of speakers for luncheons,
meetings, seminars or other events. Included in this brochure is a listing of
topics which NEK-CAP employees and volunteers have an expertise. Most
presentations are 20 to 30 minutes, but can be expanded based on the need and
subject matter.

Head Start 0-5
Presentation focuses on comprehensive Head
Start services provided to pregnant women, young children 0-5 and their
families. Discussion includes; child development, nutrition, health and
mental health, social services, services for children with disabilities, and
parent involvement. |

CACFP (Child and
Adult Care Food Program)
Services provided by NEK-CAP CACFP Program including eligibility
requirements, reimbursement rates and benefits of CACFP to family day care
home providers, children and parents. |

Weatherization
Services provided by NEK-CAP
Weatherization Program for low-income families, including types of
assessments and services. |

Presentation on NEK-CAP’s housing assistance services including utility,

Family Life Skills
NEK-CAP offers presentations on Budgeting,
Parenting, Home Economics, Home/Car Maintenance, Nutrition, and Health. The
presentations are meant to aid individuals in becoming self-sufficient. Each
presentation is appropriately 30 minutes. |

Children and
Literacy
Information will be presented regarding the importance
of reading and general conversation to enhance a child’s literacy skills for
school readiness. |

Adult Education
Discussion regarding GED and
diploma rehabilitation programs for adults. |
|
Development
Milestone (Child Development)
This is a basic overview on how children develop in four different areas,
including motor, cognitive, emotional and literacy from birth through age
five. |

Expected Outcomes of
Preschool Children A picture of how
children grow and develop in the early years, and appropriate activities
that prepare children for success in Kindergarten. |

Child Nutrition
Nutritional needs of young
children including planning, managing meal time, healthy snacks and My
Pyramid. |

of lead on a young child, immunizations, dental and other health issues. |

Health and Wellness (Mental Health and Wellness)
Specific training on Prenatal Maternal Mental Health – it is an overview
about prenatal and postnatal mental health. It speaks to the bonding between
the mother and the fetus and how the mother to be changes in her attitudes
and relationships as she prepares for the birth of her child. |

Children or Adults – What is mental health? What
we expect in being mentally healthy - in our ability to form relationships,
be positive in different aspects of our lives and how to manage stress. |

Conscious Discipline
An overview of Conscious Discipline techniques used by NEK-CAP Head Start
including specific information such as self-control or encouragement. The
information can be used for classroom or home.

Appropriate Teaching The presenter will
provide Information regarding a growing trend toward more formal academic
instruction and the importance and making activities appropriate for the
various ages of the children. |

Foster Grandparents
How to become a Foster Grandparent and volunteer in our Head Start Centers
and Outreach Offices. |

Child Abuse and
Neglect Video presentation on
Presentation of Child Abuse and Neglect followed by a question and answer
period. |

What you should look for to improve the energy-efficiency of your home. |

Home Safety
The purpose of HQS inspections and what types of safety and other issues are
covered |

Powerful Parenting
Classes are based on the Boys
Town Common Sense Parenting Model, and cover many aspects of parenting,
including effective praise, preventive and corrective teaching and
self-control. Youth Workshops are adapted to youths' developmental stages
and focus on interpersonal and problem-solving skills such as self-esteem,
self-discipline, empathy, cooperation, boundaries, and peer pressure.
Classes are given one night a week for two hours and last for up to five
weeks. |

What Poverty Feels
Like Simulation Experience to
understand the day in the life of some one living in poverty. It takes at
least 2 hours to experience this interactive presentation and 60 attendees
are required. |

Fatherhood
Involvement
Presentation discusses the importance of father/male role model in the lives
of young children. |
|
Be The Difference
Ways to volunteer your time to assist families in becoming
self-sufficiency. Includes classroom involvement, mentoring, working on
community activities and fundraising. |

Disabilities
An overview of Head Start’s inclusion services for
children with disabilities through collaboration with public schools and
early intervention networks. |
