HUD SECTION 8

The HUD Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides a rental subsidy to eligible families enabling them to rent safe, decent, sanitary housing.  Eligibility is determined through the local county CAP office and/or the Administrative Office located in Hiawatha.  Initially, an eligible applicant is placed on a waiting list until funding is available to assist with rent.

Rural areas and towns in the following counties are included in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program: Atchison (except the City of Atchison), Brown, Doniphan, Jackson, Jefferson, Marshall and Nemaha contact your County Outreach Office.

Check the HUD home page for Housing Authorities in City of Atchison, Leavenworth, Jefferson and Riley.

An applicant who is offered a voucher for participation seeks housing in the existing market.  An applicant can choose to stay where they currently are or locate new housing, but then the unit must pass a housing inspection.

The owner and applicant negotiate a lease and NEK-CAP and the owner enter a contract.  The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program pays a portion of the tenant's rent, taking into consideration rent, utility allowance, and adjusted income.  NEK-CAP and the tenant both make their share of the payments directly to the owner.
