COMMUNITY SERVICES

NEK-CAP's Community Services Department works one-on-one with individuals and families based on the belief that given adequate support most individuals and families want to and can achieve personal growth and economic self-sufficiency.  Attaining and maintaining these successes requires growth, development, and sustaining of skills in many areas of life, including:

bulletTransportation/Mobility
bulletIncome/Budget
bulletHealth/Nutrition
bulletEmployment
bulletFamily Relations
bulletChild Care
bulletCommunity Involvement
bulletEducation
bulletChild Development/Parenting Skills

SELF - SUFFICIENCY TOTAL FAMILY APPROACH

NEK-CAP's Family Advocates assist families in assessing their present situation and their individualized needs in these life areas.

Five levels of progress are assessed with each family:

bulletIn Crisis:  Immediate needs threaten physical or emotional safety.  They are unable to meet basic needs.  The lack of knowledge or access to assistance is a factor.  The family is unlikely to improve without outside intervention.
bulletAt Risk:  The family relies on temporary or inappropriate solutions to pressing problems.  The family is unable or unwilling to develop long term solutions.  The family relies heavily on assistance.
bulletStable:  The family does not face significant threats.  Public assistance helps meet needs.  The family is willing to work toward long term change.
bulletSafe:  The family is generally secure and shows a commitment to improve.  The family is goal-oriented and is making progress towards goals.
bulletThriving:  The family is strong and healthy.  The family has achieved commonly accepted standards of well-being and is able to plan for the future.  The family no longer requires any public assistance.

Advocates arrange for immediate attention of any "in crisis" situations through direct provision of services or referrals.  When crisis situations are resolved, the family is encouraged to set goals and work towards those goals.  Support from staff, education utilizing outside sources, and training for employment opportunities are necessary for success.

 SPECIAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS

The Community Services Department also assist with our local emergency food assistance services, information / referral services, and other projects throughout the year.  These may include coat drives, Christmas Bureau, and school supplies distribution to qualified families.
